Christian's Initial Idea

My initial idea was butterflies and hurricanes by muse, but it was far too long and difficult to narrate. Therefore my second idea was Scream (Funk My Life Up) by Paolo Nutini.

Scream is a funk pop song that uses the electronic sound of synth over a classic swing bass and brass foundation, making a big, catchy reminiscence of a woman unexpectedly entering his life, and "funking it up". This woman makes him feel like a teenager again, with their mutual enjoyment of activities such as "smoking my green" and "screaming with me" in "the climax". The song has heavy sexual themes, with the relationship between Paolo and this mystery woman not much more than a fling, unlike most women with "a shotgun in her hand".

The music video would narrate an abridged version of this woman entering his life and "funking it up". Starting with the singer on the street, lazing around, inactive. The woman then proceeds to walk past, and they eye each other up before the singer chases after her. As the synth begins to start, the singer enters a darkened corridor with psychedelic colours surrounding him. This highlights the science fiction sound of synth and marks the start of the singer’s life getting more active and weird. There is then a continuous motion throughout the first 2 verses and choruses. He walks down the street, with band members appearing behind him, as he chases the girl. She teases him, often stopping to make contact with the singer before moving on. In the second "act" of the video the woman "teleports" to a bar, leaving the singer speech up. We cut to him entering the same bar, buying her a drink and flirting in a booth. In the bridge we cut to them in an apartment, smoking and being intimate, before she gets up, teasing him then teleports again. As the final chorus builds up again, the singer once again enters the vortex-like corridor, appearing on a stage with a full band, singing to the girl. The song ends with the girl leaving, and a close up on the singers face.

For this I took inspiration from Robbie Williams "Candy" video, where he acts as a guardian angel for a spoilt and inconsiderate woman. The smooth motion around the street, and the close ups on Robbie and wide pan shots of him desperately chasing after the woman. The shot at the end where it the camera pans in a circle as Robbie punches hooligans, and gets hit by cars. However with the appearing band members in place of Robbie’s misfortune.

There were also a couple of ideas where the idea of recurring band members come up, for example "Seven Nation Army" by The White Stripes,  "Hello, You Beautiful Thing" by Jason Mraz, or "This Too Shall Pass" by Ok Go.
